Tourism and Heritage Promotion – North Yorkshire Moors Railway
I provide ongoing marketing and PR consultancy for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. I helped them appoint a design agency to rebrand the railway and coordinated the brand roll out. I’ve supported their marketing team during busy periods including leading all their marketing and brand campaigns for 2024. I lead their audience research, including developing and analysing the annual visitor survey and surveys for individual events. In 2025, I have worked with the railway to deliver marketing activity to support fundraising campaigns including locomotive restoration appeals and gifts in wills – please see later section for more detail.

Historic Houses promotion – Fairfax House
I delivered event marketing for two historic house promotional campaigns in late 2024 as a freelancer but working as part of the small museum team. For each event, I developed the marketing plan, wrote copy for leaflets and adverts, booked and managed advertising and led the social media plan and post event evaluation. I have significantly grown visitor numbers for these events and also social media followers and engagement. Visitor numbers for Ghost Week were significantly up on the previous year.

Fundraising campaign – North Yorkshire Moors Railway

In 2025 I launched a marketing campaign to raise £400,000 towards the restoration of The Green Knight locomotive. My brief as a freelance consultant was to be as cost efficient as possible and deliver maximum returns for the campaign. I focused on building the story of the locomotive, what makes it special to people and why it’s so vital to bring it back to steam now. The campaign including scripting and supervising photography and film shoots, artwork briefs and developing the sponsorship offers. I developed all the content for the website, a social media campaign and even the terms and conditions for all the different sponsor offers. View the campaign.
Non Profit Marketing – Leeds Housing Charity, Latch

I provide ad-hoc ongoing marketing support for Leeds housing charity Latch. I was initially appointed to develop a marketing strategy and now work alongside them to write and design leaflets and other promotional materials, edit the website, develop their brand and social media guidelines and raise their profile in the media. I also write the Latch annual report each year. Please visit my PR portfolio to find out more about my PR work with Latch.
Charity marketing – Railway Mission
I was approached by railway charity, Railway Mission, for help when their social media marketing wasn’t working. As a small charity, they have a very tight budget. I started by suggesting an audit of all their current communications, looking at what was working and what wasn’t and suggesting some cost effective ways to make a difference. I developed a marketing plan and social media content plan and have been working with them to implement the plan over the past year. I create social media content and have created digital content for their website, all working within a small budget and ensuring focus on the most effective marketing channels.

Arts and Culture Marketing – Selby Stories

I was the freelance Marketing and PR Consultant for Selby Stories from 2021 to 2024 following a successful public sector tender. This three year project, funded by Historic England and North Yorkshire Council, delivered an programme of artist installations, writer residencies and cultural events. I developed the marketing and PR strategy and ran all marketing campaigns. I commissioned the Selby Stories brand and brand toolkit. I managed the website, production of promotional materials and social media channels. I also secured press coverage for events and art installations by local artists – please see my PR portfolio. Reaching out to new and under-represented audiences was key for this project.
Tourism Promotion – Explore Heart of Yorkshire

I spent 18 months managing the tourism website and social media channels for Explore Heart of Yorkshire after the postholder left. I wrote blogs and content for the website and managed all their social media. I delivered marketing campaigns to drive awareness and footfall including for a new food festival and residents’ week.

Promoting Digital Engagement – Digital Urban

I provide ongoing marketing and PR consultancy for this small business producing 3D models and virtual reality experiences for public engagement and consultations. These are used to help people understand how redevelopments will look and feel as part of public consultation. I provide copy writing for the web and social media and stakeholder communications advice to Digital Urban’s own clients (including local authorities and Network Rail) to help them use the VR experiences to engage with a broader demographic. I have written content for a full website refresh.
Environmental Marketing – Raincliffe Woods Community Enterprise

A one-off grant enabled the woodland (the largest community managed woodland in England) to appoint me to deliver a discrete project to enhance their marketing. I developed a media database for them and secured a number of PR features in the Yorkshire Post, BBC Radio and Yorkshire lifestyle magazines. I also delivered copy writing for their website and social media channels and training focused on growing and evaluating social media activity. I also scripted and storyboarded a new promotional video.
Developing a new brand for the Ampleforth Society

I was engaged as a marketing consultant for the Ampleforth Society – the alumni association for Ampleforth Abbey and College. I helped to appoint an external designer to review and develop a new set of mini brand guidelines to ensure consistent use of their logo, crest and font. I also created a marketing and distribution plan to increase awareness and engagement with the Society.
Education and Business Marketing – University of York
I successfully tendered to deliver two marketing projects for the University of York. My work for the Specialist Skills Support Programme involved undertaking a comprehensive external review of their business marketing activity and developing a marketing campaign to deliver targets for course bookings.

I developed the launch marketing strategy for Enterprise Works – a new hub for innovation and entrepreneurship bringing together start up businesses and entrepreneurs.
Museum and Heritage Marketing – the National Railway Museum
I was Head of marketing and PR for this world-class museum in York for almost a decade. I was responsible for delivering 800,000 visitors a year and secondary spend targets. I ran high profile marketing, PR and advertising campaigns across TV, outdoor, radio, digital, print and public relations. I delivered the best visitor numbers for 3 decades (over 1 million visitors in 2013) and set the record for the best visitor figures in a single day – 13,000. I also ran campaigns to promote the return of Flying Scotsman to steam and Mallard 75 – the 75th anniversary of Mallard’s world steam record. We won 3 awards for best PR campaign and silver in the Design Effectiveness Awards for the rebrand of the museum that I led.

Heritage and Environment Interpretation, Walking & Cycling Guides
I’ve brought the stories of heritage, wildlife and nature alive through interpretation boards and communications materials for the North York Moors National Park and Cleveland Way National Trail. I’ve also written guides and leaflets about wildlife and nature conservation and interpretation for a range of walking and cycling guides. I have recently worked with Greener Pocklington on a project funded by the Yorkshire Wolds Heritage Trust to create interpretation boards, a leaflet and web pages to interpret Primrose Woods in Pocklington.
