A flexible pair of extra hands

As a marketing freelancer in Yorkshire, I’m flexible about how I work to suit the needs of your organisation. Many clients approach me because they have been awarded significant funding but don’t have the internal marketing resource to deliver. Some have had changes in their marketing team and want some help to get them through a busy period whilst they recruit. Others aren’t sure if permanent recruitment is right for them in the current climate and don’t want to pay the fees associated with a marketing recruitment agency for short term support.

If you’re looking for some marketing help, I’ll start by chatting to you about your situation and what you want to achieve. I’ll be honest about the pros and cons of working with a marketing freelancer and, if I’m not the best fit for you then I’ll often be able to recommend someone else from my Yorkshire network. I’ve managed agencies in the past and also marketing teams, including volunteers, so I can even help you to get the best out of your agency or help you recruit if that’s the best solution.

Here are a few of the ways in which I’ve worked with different clients:

Fairfax House

Fairfax House needed urgent marketing support when their marketing officer left. They wanted some flexible marketing support to help them deliver visitor targets based around key events and exhibitions. I worked alongside them as a remote extension of their small team. I introduced them to a cost effective graphic designer to help improve their brand consistency and effectiveness – a task previously undertaken by their former marketing officer. With access to their website, e-marketing systems and social media channels, I was able to manage all elements of their marketing during this busy period. I evaluated all activity to provide them with a legacy for each campaign and a baseline upon which to build in the future. I agreed a fixed fee for each marketing campaign to give them clarity on costs.

Latch – Leeds Action to Create Homes

Leeds housing charity, Latch, initially approached me to undertake a marketing audit and review of all their marketing communications. I then developed a marketing strategy and key communications materials and led an update of their brand guidelines. I then worked with Latch to embed marketing within their small team. I now work with Latch on an ongoing project basis to provide support when they need it most and when they don’t have the skills or resource in house. This has involved leading a number of PR campaigns and communications around the launch of two community share issues to raise vital funds. I also write their charity annual report each year and provide advise on any other aspect of marketing communications when needed. I work with Latch on either an ongoing day rate or a fixed fee for projects depending on their needs.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway

I’ve been working with the NYMR for over 5 years. I was initially approached to provide marketing support for their £10 million National Lottery Heritage Funded project, Yorkshire’s Magnificent Journey. I led communications for the project, including commissioning and supervising a number of videos telling the story of the project. I also set up and managed online visitor surveys and other audience evaluation to help provide them with audience insight. I helped to embed this insight throughout the organisation through presentations at staff and volunteer forums.

I have subsequently provided a range of freelance marketing and PR services to the NYMR, including stepping in during periods of significant staff change. I’ve written promotional leaflets for them, developed and managed full advertising campaigns across outdoor media and even helped them to pitch for a creative agency to develop a new brand – including managing the whole process from brief, to pitch, agency contract and the roll out. I am currently working with them to develop a number of fundraising campaigns. I even supervise photography and filming for them on location. The NYMR work with me on a project basis with a fixed fee per project but have previously worked with me on an ongoing day rate for marketing support.

If you are wondering if I might be right to help support you, let’s chat.
